Joanne graduated with a degree in mathematics from Durham University in 1996 and then embarked upon her career as a teacher of maths.

She gained a great deal of experience in two schools prior to joining Hermitage Academy as Assistant Head of Department in 2003, she went on to lead the department for 10 years until joining the leadership team in 2017. She now has responsibility as Assistant Headteacher for the school timetable and for whole school data analysis and examinations.

Joanne has always had a passion for mathematics and its applications. She reads widely on this and has a surprisingly large collection of maths books that aren’t just text books! She has travelled to Turkey and to China to be part of initiatives from the Department for Education to gather information as to how maths is taught in highly successful school systems.

Joanne loves travel and has led two World Challenge Teams from school to India in 2017 and to Madagascar in 2019. She has also for a long time helped to lead the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with the same purpose of introducing young people to wider horizons, self-reliance and the creation of great memories.
