Date Published:
Tuesday 05 April 2022

Well done to the two students in each year group who have achieved the prestigious Head of Year Award for March.

At the end of every month, our Heads of Year choose two students from their year group to win an award. The winners get the honour of being on the website and also a prize of their choice; varying from privileges in school (such as a dedicated spot on the astroturf) to a free stationery supply.

Well done to our March winners detailed below.

Year 7

Caroline is a hardworking conscientious student who always gives her best and has received praise cards from several of her teachers. She has received over 70 Laurea stamps and lapel badges for food technology, music and RE. Caroline is an excellent role model for her peers and is always supporting others around her. Well done Caroline!

Adam has shown an outstanding level of maturity in his two terms at Hermitage Academy. He has over 75 Laurea stamps and has received praise cards from staff for his efforts and attitude and has received a subject badge for History. Adam is an excellent role model for his peers and is actively involved with football and rugby outside of school. Well done Adam!

Year 8

Alfie has been given the Head of Year award this month for his continued effort across all subjects. He is an absolute pleasure to have in the year group for his kindness, support, and thoughtfulness towards others. He is enthusiastic in all lessons, always giving 100% and willing to contribute to lessons. Alfie represents the school well both in and out of the classroom. He was selected last term to take part in a visit to the Stadium of Light and was an excellent role model for the other students that accompanied him. Keep up the good work Alfie.

Emily has been given the Head of Year award for her excellent contributions to open evening. Emily did the school proud as she interacted with future students and parents to welcome them to Hermitage. She did a fantastic job and made everyone feel welcome. Emily is a valued member of the Music department, practising her trumpet ready for her Durham Music Service lessons every Wednesday. Well done and keep it up.

Year 9

Owen has been nominated this month because he demonstrates all the qualities that we value as a school. He is kind to others and always a friendly face around school.  Owen has excellent attendance and his subject teachers are full of praise. Owen continues to go from strength to strength and is a pleasure to have in the year group.

Sophie quietly and consistently gives 100% to everything that she does. She has an impressive number of subject awards and I’m sure there are more to come. Sophie represents the school in football but also volunteers for any challenge. I can always rely on Sophie, nothing is ever too much for her and this resilience will help her go far. Well done Sophie, you should be very proud of yourself.

Year 10

Neeve is an outstanding student who contributes so much to school life. She has been a dedicated member of the school council since Year 7 and is a valued member of the panel, in addition to taking part in many student voice groups. Despite these tough times, Neeve has achieved 100% attendance in Year 10, a massive achievement, and she always arrives at school on time, well equipped and looking very well presented. Her approach to her schoolwork is excellent, and although she doesn't know exactly what she wants to do, she can't wait to stay at Hermitage Academy after her GCSEs and take her A Levels before heading off to university! Neeve has taken part in lots of charity work and has been a member of Chester-Le-Street Centurian Scout group since she was young. She has recently been selected to take part in the 25th World Jamboree where she gets to go on a trip to South Korea which she has to raise money for herself. Watch this space as I am sure there is lots more to come from Neeve!

Bobby is a polite and positive student who always has a smile on his face. Like Neeve, he is one of only 6 students in the year group who have achieved 100% attendance and we are so proud of him for making the effort every day to come to school! Bobby's behaviour for learning is always excellent and he really enjoys all his lessons, especially PE and iMedia. He has excellent standards and is thought of highly by his form tutor, Mr Hardy who frequently sends him postcards home for contributing so well during form time activities. Bobby is a witty and popular student who is a marvelous role model for the rest of his friendship group. He has high aspirations for himself, and he is looking forward to applying for an apprenticeship as a mechanic when he has finished his exams. We are sure you are going to be brilliant at it Bobby!

Year 11

Daisy is a diligent and hardworking student. She has been progressing well across a range of subjects, whether it is analysing sources in history or enhancing her skills in performing arts she puts 100% into everything she sets her mind to. Daisy has a fantastic sense of humour and is well liked by staff and students. We wish Daisy the best of luck for the exams in the summer and look forward to celebrating her success.

Megan is an extremely hardworking student. She has been working exceptionally hard to ensure that she achieves success in the summer. We are very proud of Megan who models all the values that we hold within the academy. She is performing exceptionally well across all her subjects, and has received high praise from her English, French and Geography teachers. We wish Megan lots of luck for her exams in the summer and look forward to celebrating with her.

Year 12

Amy is a popular member of the Sixth Form community. She engages in all aspects of Sixth Form curriculum to a very high level. Amy is showing an incredible work ethic where she is continuing to work hard still studying four A-level subjects. She often works in free periods and stays behind after college hours to complete additional study. This impressive work ethic has promoted her improvements in her latest assessments achieving a fantastic A-grade within her Chemistry assessment. Amy is engaging in extra-curricular opportunities in performing arts and is very proactive in seeking out opportunities to further her aspirations of university study. Amy is always willing to help both teachers and students alike. This is demonstrated by her purple day cake which raised an amazing £170 which was donated to charities promoting epilepsy awareness.

Finley has made a fantastic transition from GCSE level to Sixth Form. He is a quiet student who is effectively getting on with his study to a very high standard. Teachers of Finley have been very impressed with his latest round of assessment where he has achieved or exceeded his target in all of his subject areas. Finley has also been engaging in other opportunities outside of the classroom to further his future aspirations. He has been attending Elephant Group meetings to develop skills for prospective universities and has also attended a careers workshop where he excelled! Well done Finley.

Year 13

Melissa has continued to make significant progress since returning in September to Year 13. Melissa has continued her excellent levels of commitment to her A Level subjects where she has strived to improve on the knowledge and skills she developed during Year 12 study. Melissa’s efforts have been recognised by her teachers. During the Easter term she has picked up the subject achievement award for multiple different subjects. Melissa also takes pride in her student leader role and is always willing to support staff and other students. Recently, she has supported the Sixth Form Team in organising Year 11 events. Her efforts have also been recognised by Durham University where she has received a conditional offer for teaching, after a successful interview. Well done Melissa!
